Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds onions
1/4 cup Roberts Butter
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons flour
2 quarts (8 cups) beef bouillon
1/2 cup dry white wine salt and pepper
French bread, toasted
Swiss cheese, grated
Preparation
Peel and cut onions into very thin slices. Melt butter and oil in a large saucepan. Add onions and simmer over low heat, about 15 minutes. Sprinkle salt and sugar over onions. Increase heat to moderate and cook about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are tender and have turned a golden brown. Sprinkle flour over top of onions; stir and cook 2 minutes. Stir in beef bouillon and wine. Salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 30 to 40 minutes longer. Serve hot with slices of toasted French bread and grated Swiss cheese.
